Setting the Course
Evangelistic Series coming to our church? How do you feel about that? Excited, or apprehensive? Had experiences with evangelism in the past that makes you feel less than comfortable, or a bit uneasy about inviting someone?
Well whatever your experience in the past as been, this is one you might want to check into. We'll be taking a couple of nights a month to explore the book of Revelation in a way that does not insult your intelligence, feel manipulated, or like you have just seen a page out of a grocery store tabloid translated into speech, but one that actually opens to you an understanding of the book of Revelation that allows the central figure of the book, Jesus, to stay central, and you understanding to be enriched. The title of the series is: Revelation: Hope, Meaning and Purpose," and we hope you will find it a way to deepen or discover all of those things.
As a foretaste of what the series will bring, Jon Pauline introduced a few key ideas:
The context of the book as it was written on the Isle of Patmos
Five guiding principles:
Stay true to the book, not some other agenda (no text jumping)
The Book of Revelation is Christ Centered - and so will this series be. It's about connecting with Jesus not just communicating information.
This series stays focused on the gospel, as does scripture
Will focus on the everyday practicality of the message
The series is deliberately positive, not scary - which was the original intent of the book. This series honors the book by not making it about something else.
The fault line between good and evil does not lie between "us" and "them" but right down the middle of our own hearts. This should have an impact on how we treat others, regardless of who they are and where they are coming from.
This series will also be looking at ways the Book of Revelation gives us insights into how we deal with the real issues that impact our lives every day on a personal level, for (in chapter 1 for example) it is written to a people who know what it is to face uncertainty and/or deal with rejection.

Revelation 1:1-11 (NIV)
1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
Greetings and Doxology
4 John,
To the seven churches in the province of Asia:
Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
7 "Look, he is coming with the clouds,"
and "every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him";
and all peoples on earth "will mourn because of him." So shall it be! Amen.
8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
John's Vision of Christ
9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."
