Enough is Enough

Enough

How much is enough?  Are we enough?  Is "this" enough (whatever "this" is)?  Enough.  When is enough, enough?  If you have ever been to a "all you can eat" buffet, you know that our definition of "enough" can shift depending on the situation we find ourselves in.  Our world seems to continually nudge us toward more and more, so that we have a difficult time knowing when enough is enough.

As you listen and reflect on the story Luke records to the right, we are reminded that Jesus invites us to receive His body and His blood.  He gives us all there is of Him to us. Jesus is enough.  Despite the fact that our  culture often frames that sentence as a question, it is in reality an assertion of the truth.  Jesus is enough.  Have you discovered this yet?

The gospel writers also remind us that it was in the midst of that meal that Jesus spoke frankly to them about how they would fail.  He knew that when He invited them to the table. He knew that as they shared it together.  He experienced it in the hours that followed. And yet, they and we, were and are, invited anyway.  It was not about the disciples being "enough," what mattered most was that Jesus was enough.

These, and other conversations, are what pastor Jon invites us to consider this morning as we contemplate our places around the table, and whether or not we have come to fully grasp that Jesus is, indeed, enough.  If you would like to listen to his reflections again, or perhaps for the first time, you can access our sermon library by clicking here.

Luke 22

(NIV)

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
