Experiencing Awe & Intimacy with God Pt. 1

Prayer - the Journey Begins . . .

Prayer is happening all the time around here.  Not everyone is aware of how much or how often, but, formally and informally people are praying all time.  We are literally surrounded by prayer.  Yet as much as we pray, there is more.  As much as we communicate with each other, we sense there are always ways we could do it better - listen more attentively, speak more authentically, more fully sharing ourselves than just our words.  Like any kind of meaningful communication, there is built within it a desire, a calling, to go deeper and be more present.  In this series we will explore this calling to go deeper.

When we pray, we believe we are in communication, in fact communion, with the Creator, the Redeemer, the One Who is present with us through the Spirit.  Take a moment to let that sink in.  It is amazing.  It is bigger than we are and goes beyond what we can fully explain.  It is an amazing gift.  But the gift is not some kind of supernatural ability, or some form of Christian magic, but rather on that invites us into a relationship with an amazing God.  The gift, as it is in all rich and meaningful relationships, is less about what is said, and more about who is shared.   Rich communication, whether between each other, or between us and God, is about the sharing of ourselves.  That is at the heart of the practice -- the journey of prayer.  That is what pastor Jon invites to consider as he begins our series on prayer today.  We'd like to invite you to join us

If you would like to listen to the sermon again, or perhaps for the first time, you can access our sermon library here (where you will find lots of other sermons as well).  If you would like to watch the entire worship service, that is available in our livestream archives here.

Passages Reminding Us to Pray

Philippians 4:6-7

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Luke 5:15-16

15 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

Luke 3:21-22

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
