Life on the Rock

Life on the Rock

Sometimes, we don't like to follow through when it comes to actually doing what we know we should.  Lots of reasons could probably be listed as to why this happens.  Carelessness.  The attitude that "no one can tell me what to do."  Sometimes just silly ego issues that we mask with other things.  However, the truth is, that following through on things that are designed to give life or protect it, is a wise way to go.  And yet . . . well . . . you can fill in the blanks.

Jesus once told a parable that reflects this theme.  In Matthew 7 is the parable of the wise and foolish builders.  It is a parable that reminds us that we need to not only hear, but actually act on what Jesus shares with us.  Surprisingly enough, Jesus seems to think we need to take Him and what He says seriously!

That may sound obvious, but amazingly, it is an easy point to miss.  And yet, Jesus invites us to "enter the Kingdom of heaven" now.  Sometimes we can be content to stand outside and admire it, but never get around to actually "entering" and letting the Kingdom be what shapes and directs our lives.

Matthew 7

NIV

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
