Psalm 16
Trust. Confidence. Central themes of God's Kingdom, and yet, they are things that don't always come easy to us. In this respect, life has not changed much from the time this psalm was composed and today. In the midst of that reality and the tension we sometimes live in between things that make us uneasy and trust in God, we have this Psalm - the theme of which is confidence and trust. Take a few moments to reflect on what David shares with us in this psalm. Notice the key words, ideas, concepts that surface for you as you do:
Refuge.
Belonging.
The significance of the community of fellow believers that we share the journey with.
The futility of seeking meaning in (and the suffering that comes from) other things or places than God.
The realization that God is what this is about.
Knowing that God has me in a good place, even when it is challenging.
The way God instructs me when I am willing to listen
The significance and confidence that comes from staying focused on Jesus.
The assurance that we are a part of something eternal.
As you read through the Psalm, and reflect on those words / ideas / concepts, which ones seem to draw your attention the most, or seem to be speaking to you? Do you have a sense as to why you are drawn to what you are? What might you need to be noticing about that? Imagine what it would be like to put what you are reading, noticing, being inspired by here to music and sing it! (These are lyrics to a song, not just prose for a page).
This is the Psalm Pastor Jon invites us to reflect upon this morning. If you would like to listen to the sermon again, or perhaps for the first time, you can access our sermon library here. Or, if you would like to watch the livestream version, you can do that here.
(NIV)
1
Keep me safe, my God,
for in you I take refuge.
2
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
3
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
or take up their names on my lips.
5
Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
6
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
8
I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
10
because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful[b] one see decay.
11
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
