A Song for the Storm
Only a boy named David, only . . . you know the song. What an amazing life. What a complicated and yet rich story. A man with a very flawed heart, yet a man after God's own heart. There were good times and challenging times. But perhaps where we capture the experience of David the best is in the Psalms, where we listen to David the poet and musician put his experience into words. Psalm 57. Take a few moments to read and reflect on what he is expressing (see passage to the right).
In this Psalm, David finds himself in a cave, burdened by the way he had been treated, and the things that people had been saying about him. David knew well the power of the tongue, the words that others have spoken to us or about us, perhaps even the things we say to ourselves. Few things are as powerful. Few things can be so devastating. Have you felt the impact?
David, like the rest of us, struggle with the music we hear. But in the midst of this song, notice how the lyrics change. In the midst of what he hears, he hears another melody, another tune. Do you hear it? Can you sing it? It is the movement that we find in this song that pastor Jon explores with us in the sermon this week. Psalm 57 (TNIV)
1 Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.
2 I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who vindicates me.
3 He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking those who hotly pursue me—[c]
God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.
4 I am in the midst of lions;
I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts—
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
6 They spread a net for my feet—
I was bowed down in distress.
They dug a pit in my path—
but they have fallen into it themselves.
7 My heart, O God, is steadfast,
my heart is steadfast;
I will sing and make music.
8 Awake, my soul!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.
9 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.
10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
let your glory be over all the earth.
