Build to Last

Building

Not always as easy as it looks!  One has to wonder about God's experience with us, as He tries to build us, grow us, help us become what we are created to be - whether it is more like a well executed project where everyone cooperates, or is more like trying to herd cats? But easy or hard, the reality is that we are all in the process of building.  The only question are, what is it that we are building?  How are we going about it?  What are we building on?

Building.

Jesus tells a story about building in Matthew 7, right at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.  It is important to remember that that is the context in which the story is told.  It does not stand on it's own, in fact, it is the summary story for the sermon.  The story that tells us that we are all building.  That we will experience weather.  And that what we have built upon will determine the outcome.

Building.

This is what Pastor Pablo explores with us this morning.  What building looks like.  What we are building on.  How our building is impacted by weather.  The building is happening all through the Sermon on the Mount.  The foundation is revealed.  The outcome is assured.  But we get to decide what we will build on.

Matthew 7

NIV

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
