"A morning in Cortona," Nobuyuki Tsuji's Sonata for Cortona
By sheer fortuity, I learned about one thing which I consider very important: M. L. Liu is an American who lives in Japan <but no - I live in California :->, and is the creator of a facebook page (Nobufans, https://sites.google.com/site/nobufans/ <this site :-> dedicated to the great Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsuji - Those who remember will know that this great artist, winner of a Grammy award <not yet, but the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition>, performed in Cortona at the Tuscan Sun Festival 2010.
The friendly M. L. Liu made me aware that the pianist was so impressed with Cortona that he wrote for the "City of Silence" a small sonata, "A morning in Cortona" (with a version on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7sjGpaJTog). I was also told that "this past August Mr. Tsujii also recorded this piece on a CD. This music seems to have become really popular in Japan and is truly a delightful composition.
It is noted that, although for many composers the romatic period is considered passé, Mr. Tsujii has not abandoned the art of harmony. This melody is so delicate, sensual, and sweet. The main theme is complete and courtly, and through a series of variations, leads us stirringly to explore the dimensions of the Japanese pianist. The impression is memorable, and despite the brevity of the small piece, the emotional intensity is very strong, strong without being shrill. The melody runs fluidly and we cannot help but get lost in the immense <?>
It's useless to spend words on the pianism of this artist, always clear, always clean, with a perfect use of the pedal.
For Cortona this is a great honor, because, after the many other great personalities who have spoken of the Etruscan city through the different languages of Art, this is a lastest - for now - element that has added to and that gives Cortona a beautiful soundtrack to accompany the history and the poetic bareness of its walls.

"A morning in Cortona", la sonata di Nobuyuki Tsujii per Cortona
Per un caso puramente fortuito sono venuto a conoscenza di una cosa che ritengo molto importante: M. L. Liu è un americano che abita in Giappone ed è creatore di di una pagina-fan (Nobufans) di Facebook dedicata al grande pianista giapponese Nobuyuki Tsujii - chi si ricorda saprà che questo grande artista, vincitore tra l'altro del premio Grammy, ha suonato a Cortona in occasione del Tuscan Sun Festival 2010.
Il gentilissimo M. L. Liu mi ha messo a conoscenza che il pianista è rimasto così colpito da Cortona da scrivere per la "Città del silenzio" una piccola sonata: "A morning in Cortona" (ne propongo una versione da Youtube) e mi è stato anche riferito che nell'agosto passato è stato anche inciso un cd per questa melodia. Questa musica sembra che sia diventata veramente molto celebre in Giappone ed è veramente una piacevolissima composizione.
Si nota che Nobuyuki Tsujii, benché per molti compositori il periodo della tonalità fluida e romantica sia passato, non rinuncia all'armonia del brano. Questa melodia è così delicata, onomatopeica, dolce. Il tema portante è completo e aulico e, attraverso una serie di variazioni, ci porta, cullandoci, nella dimensione sognatrice del pianista giapponese. Un tema che resta impresso e che si ricorda e, nonostante la brevità del piccolo pezzo, l'intensità emotiva è veramente forte, forte senza essere petulante. Le scale corrono via con fluidità e noi non possiamo fare altro che perderci in questo immenso.
Inutile è spendere parole sul pianismo di questo artista, sempre chiaro, sempre pulito, con un uso del pedale perfetto.
Per Cortona è questo un grande onore, perché, dopo i tanti altri grandi personaggi che hanno parlato della città etrusca attraverso i diversi linguaggi dell'Arte, questo è un ultimo - per ora - tassello che si aggiunge e che regala a Cortona una bellissima colonna sonora, che accompagna la storia e la poeticità delle sue mura.
