Prokofiev No. 3 with  British Conductor Michael Collins and the Basel Symphony Orchestra http://bit.ly/woM4NI

This was not the first time that Nobu performed in that famous city, Basel.  In December 2010, during one of the severest winters in Europe, he traveled there and played to a packed crowd in the small concert hall  - see https://sites.google.com/site/nobufans2/past-concert-tours/december-2010-europe-tour/europe-2010---1/europe-2010---2/europe-2010---3/europe-2010---4/europe-2010---5

But this is the first time that Nobu performed in the large concert hall with the orchestra, and with British conductor Michale Collins.  More so, he's performing the  third piano concerto of Sergei Prokofiev, a fiendishly challenging work for any pianist, let alone one who plays without sight. (See Nobuyuki Tsujii plays Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3)

Based on  past experience, I didn't expect to hear much from this performance in Switzerland, but, to my great surprise, through the kindness of Mr. A. Bucher of the Konzert Gesellschaft in Basil, along with various tweets and blog posts, we learned that the performance was a great success - this feat once again astonished me with just what a wonder Nobu really is.  As his fan, I am so happy and -- irrational as it may be -- so proud of Nobu!

Concert review  <This review, in German, was very kindly provided by Mr. A. Bucher.  The translation is very rough.  I will try to refine it with help from others.  But you can get the gist of what is said.>

What  followed then from the first to the last bar was a miracle of pianistic accomplishment,  but also musical sensitivity. The interaction succeeded with the orchestra; the collaboration was seamless, as if he  could see the conductor.

Mozart and Prokofiev, instead of flowers

by Nicolaus cybinski

What  music do mothers like to hear from the Basel Symphony Orchestra? The organizers of this concert  thought Mozart 39th Symphony in E flat major (K. 543), from the group's last three symphonies...

Stramme Entschlossenheit

Staunch Determination

Guest conductor Michael Collins - since 2010 the  Principal Conductor of the City of London Sinfonia. -- led the animated Symphony Orchestra, this thematic and emotional Change deliberately play off, thus, overall, belongs to a lively interpretation arose but in the very distinctive Tutti repeated quite resolutely fell. Collins, then heard sichs on, large and very wanted direct Fortissimos (what the winds, all forward two trumpeters, not twice could say), and under this Access is selectively music to demonstrate an overly tight determination

Fascinating Listening experience

Following the Mozart was the Third Piano Concerto (C major, Opus 26) by Sergei Prokofiev.

Now the contrast: The  suggestive sound effects of this  ever-popular concerto requires extreme technical virtuosity of  the soloist.  Prokofiev was an extremely accomplished pianist,  he knew exactly what he should ask and what the effects should be.

On Sunday, there was a fascinating display of this virtuosity and listening experience, because the 24-year-old <actually, only 23> Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii is blind. Fortunately, it has not been  made into a spectacle, but rather beginning with a touching and disturbing opening,  as Mr. Collins escorted  the young man to the Steinway, on which the pianist proceeded to touch and feel the keyboard.

What  followed then from the first to the last bar was a miracle of pianistic accomplishment,  but also musical sensitivity. The interaction succeeded with the orchestra; the collaboration was seamless, as if he  could see  the conductor. For example, his solo at the beginning of the variation movement  <the second movement?> revealed that he has internalized the music.  What remained was astonished admiration for a very high power.

The final ovation and applause was tremendous  and was probably mainly for him.

But let it also be  noted that Collins elicited a beautiful, intense interpretation of the orchestra singing Piani elicited. Conclusion: The mothers did not regret it, this is Mozart as it should be..

Basel

In this  concert, I played  Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 for the first time,

Conductor Michael Collins is also the world's leading clarinetist

I played with the  great Basel Symphony Orchestra.

1,200 of customers' came to the special Mother's Day concert at 11 am.

After the playing of the Prokofiev there was rapturous applause, cheers, foot stamping.

I made a short speech in a mixture of German and English, thanking the  support for the reconstruction after the earthquake,

I then played "Still, we  alive" for  encore.

For a few seconds until I released my hands from the keyboard after I finished playing,

the entire hall  was filled with the tranquility of not a single sound,

Then it was filled with big round of applause once again

May 13.  I was on pins and needles waiting to hear something about the concert in Basel, as it is Nobu's first performance of Prokofiev 3.  Finally a tweet came at 11PM Swiss time (the concert took place at 11 AM earlier in the day) that made me strangely happy:

Nobuyuki Tsujii Michael Collins Mother's Day concert at Basel was the best. I had a good view of the piano from where we sat. Exciting!"

And a kind facebook user wrote on May 14 :

"Nobu's concert in Basel was a big success. The audience was amazed by brilliant and unbelievably touching Prokofiev followed by an encore of Nobu's own piece commemorating last year's earthquake disaster in japan.

Long lasting applause and lots of tears from over a thousand people in the audience."

Let us rejoice!

◆I was hoping to read something in Basel publications, but none was forthcoming.  It continues to be the case that while Nobu is overseas, we mainly hear from Japanese who live abroad, for which I am grateful.  Two more blog posts surfaced that mentioned this performance:

According to  a Nobu fan in Japan:

This blogger is a Japanese lady who has been living in Basel for more than 30 years. She is a musician and music teacher. She wrote Nobu's Prokofiev was a performance by an angel. She says she cannot come up with any other words to describe it because her vocabulary is poor. She visited Nobu's dressing room to let him know that she was moved, but she was just so moved she could only hug small Nobu. Isn't this entry wonderful?

Nobu was practicing so hard every day to prepare for the London debut. He

was at the piano all the time except when he ate and slept.

I heard that his Prokofiev was received pretty well. I'm happy.

Because I had a pretty hard time making tapes of that concerto. It was so

different from just listening to it.

So, we had to be pretty careful at lessons because no mistakes are allowed.

He will do well at the concert with Ashkenazy.

He chose the encore that fits him perfectly.

◆And Nobu has a new fan in Basel!  She is Debora, a Ph.D. who posted a well-written and heart-felt  entry in her blog about Nobu.
