I came out of Nobuyuki Tsujii's concert in tears. Not just that it was "great for someone who cannot see!" But to me it makes little difference whether he can see or not.

This posting on a piano-themed blog touches on a recently released ranking of music colleges in the world. The blogger laments that no Japanese university made the list of top 50. (S)he wrote (loosely translated): "I do not know how Japanese music colleges are evaluated, but perhaps they are a little weak in producing people who are immediate active in the world after graduation. Pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii is an exceptional presence. He does not have any experience studying abroad but has won the Van Cliburn International. I wonder if there is any possibility that the Ueno Gakuen University (Nobu's alma mater) would be in this ranking. Just a thought."
I know about the ranking; it is highly subjective and not taken seriously even by people in U.K.

The short video shows Japan's classic music writer Takuya Katagiri endorsing Nobu's upcoming Chopin Recital at Suntory Hall Tokio March 28&30 (long SOLD OUT).
There is a longer posting about the video, which our friend Yuko explains as: "The footage is shown at Mori Building website. It is a kind of advertisement footage introducing Nobu's concert at Suntory Hall, which is a part of Mori Building property. I am glad that this writer thinks highly of Nobu's musicality."

A follow-up article to the recent tragedy about the most recent Cliburn Piano Competition winner. This piece is written by Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News of Texas, about a history of misfortunes that struck Cliburn Competition winners. In the article he wrote that "only one [Cliburn winner], Radu Lupu, has been acclaimed as one of the great pianistic artists of our time." This writer openly disagreed with Nobu's gold medal in 2009, so it is not surprising -- and fortunate -- that Nobu is not mentioned in the article.

Shinobu spotted this announcement first. Nobu returns to perform in the Yatsugatake Kogen Salon Concerts this summer, August 19 & 20. His past appearances (2011-13, I believe) at this Nagano mountain resort, Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge 八ヶ岳高原ロッジ, were instant sell-outs. Nobu will perform his own compositions and classical music. This photo I believe was taken fairly recently and Nobu looks quite SLIM!

Judging from web postings, the Marubeni Group (Japan) corporate image animation is a big hit. Studio Ghibli has quite a following among anime fans. And Nobu's music is praised.

Nobu composed for newly unveiled Marubeni Group (Japan) corporate image animation -
The Marubeni Group has now expressed this corporate image as an animation utilizing the world view held by Studio Ghibli. Adopting the motif of what is said to be Japan's oldest manga, Choju Jinbutsu Giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans), the animation tells the story of mutual compassion and cooperation between a hare and a frog set against an old Japanese backdrop. This announcement relates to the first of three short animations, which follow the journey of these two travelers. The animation is a new Studio Ghibli production in which Mr. Katsuya Kondo, who worked as the supervising animator on Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, produced the illustrations and composition. The accompanying music was composed and performed by leading Japanese pianist, Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii.
The Marubeni Group will use the animation throughout its global business regions and locations. As stated in the new mid-term management plan GC2018 announced in February 2016, the Marubeni Group aims to become a true global company that contributes to both regional economies and society. The Marubeni Group will continue its business activities to make someone in the world happy and to further enrich society. "Music was composed and performed by leading Japanese pianist, Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii."

[I just noticed this: The position of the piano is unusual, and so close to the steps! I wondered if Nobu had problem locating the piano -- normally he leaps up from the bench and puts his left hand on the backside of the top of the piano. But the twitter wrote back to say there was no problem. ^_^]
