昨日は、久しぶりに辻井伸行君親子と私たち夫婦で一緒に食事をする機会があって、先月のオーストラリアでの演奏会成功の話などを聞きながらとても楽しいひと時を過ごしました。ただ、お母さんのいつ子さんと私ばかりがよく喋っていたような気がします。すみません。
Yesterday, I had a chance to have dinner together with parents and child of Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii for the first time in a while. I had a very pleasant time listening to the story of the success of his concerts in Australia last month. However, it seems that Itsuko-san and I were doing most of the talking. I apologize.
3日前の朝のNHKに辻井君が出ることは知っていて、たまたまその時テレビが近くにあったので気がついてスイッチを入れた瞬間に彼がちょうど出ていたのですが、もう少しで逃すところでした。「真田丸」のテーマソングなどをヴァイオリンの三浦文彰さんと弾いていたのですが、演奏もトークも二人ともとても良かったです。あとで本人に聴いたらあれは生放送だったのですね。朝の5時半にNHKのスタジオに向かったとか。早朝から大変でしたね。

I knew that Tsujii-kun was appearing on NHK three days ago in the morning, but he was on screen the moment that I switched on a TV that was nearby at the time. I was almost about to miss it. He played the theme song of "Sanada Maru" with violinist Fumiaki Miura ; both the performances and the talks were very good. I heard from him later that this was a live broadcast; he had to get to the NHK studio at 5:30 AM. It was seriously early in the morning.
[Editorial: 5:30 AM!! No wonder Nobu looked so subdued on the show . I can't imagine playing music at that time of the day. Truly amazing. ^_^]

[Editorial: I don't think the photo shows Nobu's practice room -- I have seen video footage of that room and it's not that spacious. I think this is actually the living room in Nobu's Tokyo family flat. As far as I can tell, Nobu's family does not live in opulence.]

I know everyone has already heard that performance, but it is good that Nobu is remembered by BBC Radio 3's John Shea, who chose to play the recording on today's "Through the Night" program.

♪ November 23 Linda: A Nobu fan who plays piano for ballet dancers performing at the Kennedy Center
Nobu has a big fan in the U.S., Linda, a professional pianist.
Among other accomplishments, Linda plays piano for the training sessions of professional dancers who perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Linda was -- like Nobu -- born blind, but made good use of her talent to build a musical career and maintain an independent & active life style.
Her piano playing can be heard in this video posted today on the Facebook page of the Kennefy Center.
In the video, she is playing for the dancers of the Cincinnati Ballet Company, who will be performing the "Nutcracker" at the center.

This blogger was at an airport lounge for All Nippon Airways (ANA, a loyal sponsor of Nobu) and became entranced with a sound track that he heard as BGM (background music).
He inquired ANA about the music, and was given a full list of 20 tracks recorded by Nobu on the sound track, customized for ANA.
The blogger wrote:
つまり、ラウンジで流れている楽曲と同じものを手に入れることはできないよ、ということですね。
うーん、残念。ANAスペシャルとかいって、この20曲でCD出してもらいたいくらいですが・・・
In other words, you cannot get the same tracks as the ones flowing in the lounge.
Well, too bad. Although I understand that it is an ANA special, I would like to have a CD with those 20 songs ...
The blogger further investigated and found all 20 songs have been recorded on various Nobu CDs except
「パガニーニ狂詩曲第18変奏」だけは、現在販売されているどのCDにも収録されていないらしいという結果になりました。
その他の曲は、どれかしらのCDに収録されています。
Only the "Paganini Rhapsody 18th Variation" seems not to have been included in any CD currently being sold. Other songs are included on existing recordings.
結果、ANAラウンジで現在流れている曲20曲の内、19曲をカバーするために必要なCDは5枚です。
As a result, of the 20 songs currently flowing in the ANA Lounge, five CDs are required to cover 19 songs.
You should see the spreadsheet that this blogger presented to support this finding (see photo below) ^_^ Awe-inspiring .... BRAVO!!

♪ November 22 音楽の友(Friends of Music) magazine report on 辻井伸行 inオーストラリア Nobuyuki Tsujii in Australia The December issue of Japan's has a report on 辻井伸行 inオーストラリア Nobuyuki Tsujii in Australia. Yuko, Nobu fan in Japan, looked it up and shared the text with us.
I especially like these lines:
協奏曲では、アシュケナージは時折辻井の演奏に耳傾けてはオーケストラを振かえり、「ほら、聴いた？いいだろう！」とばかりに笑顔を振りまく場面がたびたび見られた。
" During the concerto, Ashkenazy occasionally listened to the [solo] performance of Tsujii and often turned back to conduct the orchestra with a widespread smiling face, as if saying "Did you hear that?"
当地でﾃﾞﾋﾞｭｰとなる辻井に対して、
定期会員にとってスターを迎えるというよりも、新人の品定めという気持ちであったと思う。しかし通常は遠慮なく咳やくしゃみをするというシドニーの聴衆が(ホールの録音エンジニア話）、この日は息をひそめて、辻井の演奏に聴き入っていた。ハ長調に転じる終楽章の華麗なコーダが終わると、満員の聴衆から大きな喝采と歓呼が沸き起こり、楽団員も辻井に笑顔と拍手と歓声送った。
Tsujii was making his debut here, and the regular concert-goers might have thought of him as a typical newcomer instead of a star. However, Sydney's audience -- who cough and sneeze without hesitation (based on my conversation with the recording engineer in the hall) -- was listening breathlessly to Tsujii's performance on this day. At the finish of the brilliant coda of the final movement that turns to C major, big cheers and applause rose from the crowded audience, and members of the orchestra also sent smiles, applause and cheers to Tsujii.

それぞれの体験とたくさんの思いを抱えながら
観客として ここにいる私たちのひとりひとり。
To postpone this concert rather than cancel it, to hold it today
How much effort was required of some people?
Those who were involved in restoring the affected theatre
Companies responsible for the planning and operation of this concert
Artists who adjusted the schedule
And
With each experience and lots of thoughts
Everyone of us here as spectators.
それらが合わさって 今の この瞬間があるんだと思うと、
なんだか 自然と涙が溢れた。

ピアニスト辻井伸行さんシークレットコンサート♪
辻井さんは1988年生まれの28才。
話し方がとてもチャーミングで好感がもてる。
自作曲「ロックフェラーの 天使の羽」は
小学生の頃、クリスマスの時期にニューヨークに行ったときに
雪の降るロックフェラーセンターでの思い出を綴った曲だそう。
やわらかくな雪が舞う光景が目に浮かぶステキな曲だった。
前半は自作曲、後半はクラシック
ドビュッシー／2つのアラベスク、夢、月の光
ラヴェル／亡き王女のためのパヴァーヌ、水の戯れ
ショパン／バラード第1番、英雄ポロネーズ
わたしはピアノ演奏に関してはずぶの素人だけど、
特に後半のクラシック演奏での指の動きがすごいことはわかる。
ずっと画像がぶれてる感じ・・・
ピアノ演奏もスポーツと同じなんだな。
体全体で指先を動かしている。
繊細でやわからなか音色もあるし、力強い音色もある。
トークの中で辻井さんは「海の青、空の青のようにブルーが好きです」
と話していた。感動してちょっとウルッときてしまった。

The Marubeni Group, together with Studio Ghibli, Inc. (“Studio Ghibli”), has produced a series of animations to convey its corporate image as a group that contributes to regional economies and society. This third and final instalment, The Journey Continues, follows the first and second animations that were announced in March and June, 2016, respectively.
This newly released third animation shows the frog and the hare that met and deepened their bond in the previous episodes quarrel and become friends again. As with the previous two episodes, this is a new Studio Ghibli production for which Mr. Katsuya Kondo, who worked as the supervising animator on Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, produced the composition and illustrations. The accompanying music was composed and performed again by leading Japanese pianist, Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii, but is a different melody from before.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra has announced that Japanese pianist Nobuyuki (Nobu) Tsujii will replace Hélène Grimaud in its 2017 season following the French pianist’s withdrawal due to personal reason.
Her replacement, Tsujii, was recently in the country for the SSO’s Beethoven Festival, performing Beethoven’s Third Piano concerto. “There was magic in the air when Tsujii performed with the Orchestra in October this year,” said SSO Managing Director Rory Jeffes, “and the overwhelming positive response both from our audiences and the SSO musicians themselves meant we wanted to invite him back to Sydney as soon as possible.”
Tsujii – who was born blind – will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the SSO at the Sydney Opera House on May 19 and 20 and will also give a recital performance on May 22 at City Recital Hall Angel Place featuring Beethoven’s Appassionata and Moonlight sonatas and Bach’s Italian Concerto. All previously issued tickets sold as part of a package or package add-on for Hélène Grimaud’s Sydney concerts will now be valid on the same dates for the Tsujii performances.
“While we are disappointed Hélène Grimaud’s fans won’t have a chance to see her in 2017,” Jeffes said, “we are thrilled that Tsujii accepted our offer to perform once again with the SSO. These are concerts not to be missed.”

According to this site: Distance from Berlin to Sydney is approximately 16100 kilometers. Fastest one-stop flight between Berlin and Sydney takes close to 26 hours .

I looked up the orchestra's 2017 brochure. The original performance was Brahm's No. 1 (which I hope Nobu will learn soon) and Ms. Grimaud was going to perform her water-themed recital (which she has been performing all over the world). I hope people in Sydney will support Nobu and buy tickets for the replaced performances.
By the way, there is going to be a New Year TV special in Japan about Nobu's debut Australia, so perhaps it can drum up some interest in Japan for a tour to see Nobu perform at the Opera House.

Japanese road reopens one week after vast sinkhole appeared

I was on that road in Fukuoka when I traveled in Japan in 2013 for Nobu's concerts with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the OEK.

I suspect the just completed Japan tour with Chamber Orchestra of Europe has something to do with this, especially the "Coronation" CD.

I just checked the tickets sales for Nobu's Bach/Mozart/Beethoven recital next year, and noticed that they have opened up the balcony.
I am glad they did that. Last time they didn't make those choice seats available till the last minute, shortchanging some people who purchased seats downstairs in the back.

Earlier this year, there was the release of a book-CD package featuring Nobu's music and a book ("What Color is the Wind Today) authored by his mother, Mrs. Itsuko Tsujii, there have been quite a number of interviews with Mrs. Tsujii that appeared in Japanese media, about her experience bringing up Nobu.

In this article, Mrs. Tsujii talks about the people and the circumstances under which Nobu entered the 2005 Chopin competition. Although the piece is ostensibly about lessons that Mrs. Tsujii learned from Nobu (think positive and have fun in what you do), to me it is more about the love of an extraordinarily devoted mother. It is quite moving. Mentioned in the article are Yutaka Sado, Masahiro Kawakami and others who played a large role in Nobu's musical development, as well the Cliburn Competition experience.
