When I was in Paris in early January for the thrilling recital of Nobuyuki Tsujii, I had no idea that I might not be able to travel so freely again for sometime, perhaps for the rest of the year :-(

When the dusts settled after the COVID-19 crisis, I fear that many orchestras and concert venues may not have survived.

For the lucky ones, 2020 may be seen as an unwelcome "gap year."

As a fan of Nobuyuki Tsujii, I hope he -- and those who support him -- are among the lucky ones. Even so, he will not escape the damage if the orchestras that he performs with, such as the Orpheus, have succumbed to the virus.... More at "2020: a gap year that no one wants"

Coming to PBS in May 2020: Nobuyuki Tsujii "Touching the Sound"

I was fortunate enough to be among the first who saw the film "Touching the Sound, the Improbable Journey of Nobuyuki Tsujii" when it premiered in New York City in April 2014. It is the third production about Nobuyuki Tsujii by renowned documentary maker Peter Rosen, preceded by the 2009 Cliburn Competition documentary "A Surprise in Texas" and the 2011 film Nobuyuki Tsujii live at Carnegie Hall.

"Touching the Sound" is a portrait of Nobuyuki Tsujii up to year 2013 (age 25). It has been screened worldwide, most recently at the Musee Guimet in Paris on January 12 2020. In the U.S., it is being shown nationwide for the first time, next month (May 2020), on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) stations.

Time flies. Six years have passed since the premiere of this film, since when the star of Nobuyuki Tsujii has further risen, especially in his native Japan. The film is a nostalgic lookback of Nobu's early days. Among other points of interest: you will see Nobu's childhood family photos; footage explaining how he learns music without being able to see a music score; scenes of his U.S. performances -- his Carnegie Hall debut recital and his 2013 U.S. tour; and an endearing closing scene of Nobu -- in shorts and tee shirt -- wading into the Atlantic Ocean. There is also footage of the 2011 earthquake/tsunami that devastated eastern Japan, and of the homage paid by Nobu to the victims.

This is a quietly affecting film that should help to uplift spirits in these trying days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nobu-kun is lucky!

Taking good care of ourselves and staying isolated is the best defense against the coronavirus.

Thank you, Mrs. Tsujii, for taking good care of Nobu-kun!♪ March 31 Cherry blossoms

Instagram from Mrs. Itsuko Tsujii:

今日から4月🌸

写真は10日前、咲き初めた桜を観に行った時の1枚。

コロナウィルス拡大で外出自粛の今は家で充電の毎日です。

皆さま、くれぐれもお気をつけてお過ごし下さいね‼️

"April starts today. This photo was taken 10 days ago when cherry blossoms started to bloom.

Now that the spread of the Coronavirus is out of control, we're staying home every day. Everyone, please take care of yourself. "

In the photo, the shaggy top of Nobuyuki Tsujii's head can be seen at the bottom right corner :-)

It looks like he is standing in a wide open space and not among crowds.

♪ March 31 Streaming this week by the Liverpool Phil: Petreko and Nobuyuki Tsujii play Grieg's concerto

👍Kudos to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for streaming their past performances in this difficult time. This week: Grieg's concerto by #VasilyPetrenko & Nobuyuki Tsujii 辻井伸行. The orchestra & Mo. Petrenko are great friends of Nobu, and they will tour Japan this fall -- YES, THEY WILL!

Orchestra's tweet:

Welcome to another week of music!

Multiple musical notes

We’ll be streaming Walton's Partita and Grieg’s Piano concerto with the brilliant Nobuyuki Tsujii on Friday evening at 7.30pm & Tchaikovsky’s great Fourth Symphony on Sunday at 2.30pm, all conducted by Vasily Petrenko https://facebook.com/pg/LiverpoolPh

* Wigmore Hall recital canceled

From Avex Classics International:

"Sadly, due to Wigmore Hall'S closure until 31 July 2020, our concerts on 23 May with Yu Kosuge and on 27 June with Nobuyuki Tsujii will no longer be going ahead..."

In light of the ongoing Coronavirus epidemic, yhis comes as no surprise. I hold a ticket to Nobu's recital, and will forfeit the refund as a small gesture in support of the concert business community.

* Winnepeg Symphony Orchestra

Mr. Nick Asano, former manager of Nobu, brought this to my attention:

Posted by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra:

As many of you have already heard in the media, some very difficult decisions were made on Wednesday here at the WSO. Temporary layoff notices were issued to 67 orchestra members, 30 members of its administration staff and 14 Sistema teachers---a decision that was not made easily or lightly. The WSO is facing one of the most difficult times in its history. So many arts organizations across the country and around the globe are. Nobuyuki Tsujii performed with the WSO in 2013 & in 2015. I remember especially the 2013 debut, which happened in deep winter.

In his concert report, Nobu wrote:

’13年1月18・19日(カナダ)

アレクサンダー・ミッケルスウェイト指揮、ウィニペグ交響楽団と

プロコフィエフのピアノ協奏曲第3番を演奏しました。

外は寒かったけれどもお客様からは熱烈な喝采を頂きました。

2013 January 18 & 18 (Canada)

Alexander Mickelswaitt conducts with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

I played Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.3.

Although it was cold outside, we received enthusiastic cheers from our customers.

The weather was  -20°C to -30°C during the days when he was in town.
