NCIC HITS
A “HIT” is the way that we communicate with other agencies. There are two different types of hits. Those that we receive from other agencies and those that we send to other agencies. We would receive a YQ message from another agency if they found something we had listed NCIC. These messages are sent through UCJIS.
When we RECEIVE A HIT, follow these steps:
Find the case number in the hit comments and check the narrative in the law incident screen in Spillman to make sure it is still stolen.
Run the Person/Vehicle/Property NCIC to check that it is still listed as stolen/missing out of our Agency.
If it is still listed, send the corresponding YR message to the originating agency confirming the information, if the HIT is a vehicle, in the comments of the YR request information if the vehicle is still drivable, if the keys are still there, and if there is anything to process, or if the vehicle is not drivable request the tow yard information – add comments in the YR confirming the Person/Vehicle/Property is still listed and we will be contacting the on duty Sergeant/Officer and the Guardian/Registered Owner or Owner of the property, request a $L be sent.
Notify Guardian/Registered Owner (RO) that the person or property has been recovered. Advise them if they can respond to pick it up or if it is being towed.
Notify the on-duty Sergeant or Officer of the HIT. Be sure to also notify the officer over the case by email (if they are not on duty) that the item has been recovered. Include information about whether or not the owner responded and took possession of the item or if a message was left. Include the locating agency's information, including a case number if possible.
After the requesting agency sends a locate message ($L), for NCIC hits out of UVPD only or entered by UVPD, the dispatcher will clear the person/vehicle/article from NCIC, following the clearance procedure listed above. The dispatcher will then add a supplement to the original case in Spillman.
