Intro
This is a brief preview of a potential post-intermediate/pre-advanced Spanish level course for Spanish Majors and Minors. After having completed the General Education requirements of the university, students would build upon the grammar and vocabulary acquired to sharpen and master written expression of the Spanish language. Using various cultural manifestations of Spanish and Latin-American football as a guide, the most culturally significant club teams and the national (both masculine and feminine) selections allow for in depth cultural and historical themes to be explored. The authors, Eduardo Galeano and Javier Marías who are prolific authors from Uruguay and Spain, have meaningful work that also explores the sociocultural complexities of the sport. Passages from the books, El fútbol a sol y sombra (Galeano, 1995) and Salvajes y sentimentales: Letras de fútbol (Marías, 2000) demonstrate that cultural analysis of the sport allows for academic exploration beyond reproductions of celebratory and nostalgic language. Meanwhile, various forms of media will be presented like articles or the even will have written projects where they have to place themselves in the shoes of a Hispanic football journalist.
