Intro
“Lengua viva” is a website that features grammar topics that are linked to diverse cultural themes. This website was created to aid language teachers to easily access additional material and incorporate culture in their classrooms while practicing grammar with their students.
Since language is deeply intertwined with culture, this project aims to foster a deeper connection between the learner and the target language. In its initial stage, the website is focusing on two different Spanish-speaking countries, Mexico, and Spain. There are similar grammar modules for each country, but the actual contents, or the specific focus of the exercises are slightly different. Two of the exercises offer reading comprehension assessments with culturally relevant texts and questions. There is also a discussion prompt at the end of each text to allow for a more communicative activity.
The other two exercises focus on both the informal and formal command while learning a well-known recipe from each country. In the future, this website will be expanded upon and feature a greater variety of exercises and original media input in the form of audio and video. The goal is to incorporate more Spanish-speaking countries to the website to broaden our students’ cultural horizons.
