The sextant is a reflecting optical instrument invented by the British. An essential navigation instrument in the past, the sextant measures the angle between two objects in the sky or on the ground to locate the position of the observer. It is called sextant because the arc length of its scale is around 1/6 of the circumference, or 60 degrees.
