The local group
The local group
Audio Guide:
The Milky Way and around 50 other galaxies make up a galaxy group that is about 8 million light-years in diameter and known as the Local Group. Among the galaxies in this group, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the Milky Way, and the Triangulum Galaxy are the largest. They have their own satellite systems and are much more massive than other galaxies. The largest, the Andromeda Galaxy, is the only extragalactic galaxy observable to the naked eye. It is two and half times larger than the Milky in diameter and contains five times as many stars.
