The collision and cannibalism between galaxies
The collision and cannibalism between galaxies
Audio Guide:
The collision between galaxies results from the effect of gravitational forces, which can bend and deform galaxies, but the stars within may not necessarily collide. When galaxies collide, gas around the galaxies will be compressed and create many new stars. Instances of galaxy collision are abundant in the universe. For example, the Milky Way galaxy is currently devouring smaller neighboring galaxies. The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy are also approaching each other at the speed of around 100 kilometers per second. While the universe is expanding, galaxies within the same cluster continue to collide and devour each other.
The models and image simulations on site will help you understand the process of galaxy collisions.
