Computer graphics are ubiquitous in film and TV today. The line between reality and fiction is a thin one because of the powerful programs and techniques available to storytellers
Until recently effects were largely all based on chromakey replacement (greenscreen or bluescreen) with digital artists painstakingly replacing live footage with alternative footage. In the past couple of years however virtual production has eclipsed greenscreen sets in many applications. There are many aspects to effects being inserted into live video - we'll explore the use of After Effects in doing so.
All key replacement technology relies on a 'clean chroma key' that software can remove to essentially mask the footage you want to keep and remove the parts of the shot you don't want to keep
The catch is, the replacement of the color is highly dependent on how 'clean' the key is ie: how uniformly lit your chromakey is.
Virtual production allows filmmakers to utilize a combination of live action and cutting-edge digitally created environments rendered in real time on LED walls and ceilings (known as “volumes”) to deliver a production experience that traditional green screen sets couldn't match. Because the image projection in the volume matches the lighting on the actor the result of using volumes to film gives an incredibly flexible production environment that greatly reduces the post-production needed on a project.
The basic After Effects interface is familiar to any Adobe user. There's A) an assets location B) a monitor of the output C) layers section D) assets monitor E) timeline F) optional windows (effects/alignment/properties etc..)
This assignment can replace any other assignment in the course, I want you to explore some aspect of working in effects. To that end please complete the following tutorials or if you find something else you'd rather try please approach me about it)
