Complete Subnetting Problems 3->6 (page 32->39)
Practical Subnetting #3 & 4, page 62-65)
Describes the physical and logical layout of a network
Physical Topology: the actual (scaled) network
Logical Topology: how the various computers are organized from a communications perspective (star topology being common)
Physical network diagram - more like a blueprint
Logical Network diagram - more like a mind-map
A company requires a network upgrade. The company consists of 7 departments (Payroll & Finance, R&D, Administration, Public Relations, Tech. Support, Training, Support Staff). Each department is located in a large room which is less than 100 m from the main distribution facility(wiring closet). The number of workstations in each department is as follows:
Payroll & Finance 19
R&D 16
Admin. 4
PR 6
Tech. Support 43
Training 33
Support Staff 11
The network upgrade must include all the wiring (Layer 1), switches (Layer 2) and routers (Layer 3) and it must allow for potential growth in each subnet of up to 10%.
You own a network design and installation company and your task is to compete for the network upgrade contract. You must submit a proposal which includes and/or addresses(at least) the following:
Recommended class of IP address (also choose a hypothetical network IP address and state your reasons for choosing it)
Logical diagram of network
IP addresses of all subnets, masks, ports, workstations, etc.
List of equipment (including product names, costs and where to purchase)
Estimate of final cost (excluding labour)
Health and safety implications for employees
Security concerns and recommendations
To submit:
The pitch and notes, in whatever format you choose
The packet tracing file to ensure the network is viable
TIPS:
-The group that wins the contract will receive the highest mark so make your proposal look nice and keep the costs low.
-The more information, the better
-You may include workstations, servers and other equipment in a separate price list
-You may work in groups of 2
