Bridge Design and Build Challenge
Studying bridges is an excellent way to learn many things. A bridge tells a story about our past. It's design reflects who the people were that invented and manufactured it. It tells us about what life was like when the bridge was built. It tells us what people knew about design and manufacturing processes. Bridges incorporate the use of very basic design principles but are usually constructed in ingenious and complex ways. Special materials are used in bridges to make them strong and long lasting. Bridges are frequently viewed as works of art and are easily recognizable in their location. For the student just starting to understand design principles and how technology plays in our lives there is no better place to start than by studying bridges.
You will design and build a bridge able to span a distance of 80cm and support a dead load, at its midpoint, of 5 lbs (plus the bucket weight of 2 lbs) for 20 seconds. After this initial requirement, further testing to destruction will continue with increments of 5 lbs. being applied.
In addition to spanning a gap of 80cm, the bridge must be at least 15cm wide. It’s height will be determined by what type it is and by you and your design team. The load will be hung underneath the bridge on a hook. You will have a limited supply of material available so use it well.
Note: Construction can only take place in the classroom.

In order to have a successful bridge, we first need to understand how a structure bears weight
Create a new document titled "Bridge Report". When you are done there will be a couple of pages with sections titled:
research
design
construction
results
summary
Research the following words and give definitions for each.
Beam
Compression
Deck
Girder
Span
Stress
Tension
Torsion
Truss
In your design report include the results of research of 3 bridge types and give the advantages and disadvantages of each. An excellent internet resource site may be found at:
Draft your bridge design using pencil and paper. Get a SKETCH and an ELEVATION for the bridge - this drawing must be done in a RELATIVELY professional manner and include labels and measurements and will be included in the final report.
Most importantly, turn these drawings into a CAD drawing that you can print off for reference while you build
Construction of the bridge should include testing cycles. You should always be aware of standard workplace safety habits
After you have tested your bridge, complete your report on the process from start to finish. It should explain your thoughts on the design process, the construction phase, and testing phase, include your results and any changes you'd make in the future.
Key ideas to have in the report:
Building process (did you struggle to get started?, was it fun? did you learn something new?
What factors came into play that helped or did not help your project?
Your design, (how did you design to bear the maximum weight?)
The testing (did your bridge win? If not, why? Where did it fail?)
What did you learn during this project, and what would you do differently if you did this assignment again?
