Introduction to PHOTOGRAPHY
This is a collection of various pieces of information that will help you be successful in AWQ3M:
This MUST be filled out and signed if you intend on using school equipment.
You may borrow our equipment but you must fill out the sign-out form if you do so. If you take a camera without filling out the sheet you lose your priviledge of signing it out again in the future.
Check the working order of the camera BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT. If you notice it's not functioning please let me know - otherwise it is assumed you broke it and you are responsible for footing the bill for the repairs.
Ensure your battery is fully charged. Nothing's worse than running out while you're in the middle of shooting. To that end, ALWAYS CHARGE YOUR BATTERY WHEN DONE. We have a bin of charged batteries. If you notice one is charged that is on the charger and you want to start charging your battery, remove the charged one, put it in the bin, and place yours on the charger.
When you click on the folder icon at the bottom you will see this:
COMPUTER (windows 10 instead of Computer it says THIS PC):
you will something tha will say LOCAL DISK or LOCAL DRIVES or HARD DISK DRIVES. If you store your files here you will NOT have access to them on an different computer. Access speeds are MUCH faster using the local drive, but anybody has access to them (including deleting them)
NETWORK LOCATION:
if you store your files on your network space it starts with your gmail name. If you click on DOCUMENTS generally that links you to your student drive, but it's often broken. The advantage is you have access to that same space through any computer you log into in the OCDSB, however, you have a limited amount of space and access speeds are FAR slower than if you stored things locally.
I would highly recommend storing your photos on the local disk drive AND on your student server space (student drive) AND also putting them into Google Drive. Like with your student drive you have access to these files anywhere, but you have to upload/download them. Create folders in google drive to keep your projects organized (e.g. Assignment #1, Assignment #2 etc...)
IF YOU ONLY STORE THINGS ON YOUR SD CARD OR USB STICK YOU ARE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR FAILURE. All too often an SD card corrupts and you've lost all of your work for the assignment if you're not backing it up in various other locations.
Google Photo is a way of storing your photos online. The image quality IS REDUCED for these stored images if you want to use an unlimited amount of space.
It is recommended to create albums for your photos. A photo can be part of one or more albums. I'd encourage you to use the metataging information embedded in Google Photo. It will allow for deeper searches for your content down the road.
You can organize in Google Photo by creating albums, but also by using the TEXT option at the top right in the album menu
a) shooting on DSLR's: remove the SD card from your camera (at right) and either put it in the card reader built-into your computer (far right), or get a USB card reader (far right bottom) and plut it into a USB port into your computer.

Go to File Explorer (the folder icon at far left). When plugged in your SD card will appear in This PC. When you enter the camera folder (Nikon D80 picture at left) you'll see a folder called DCIM (digital camera images). Inside of that will be all your photos. Copy them to your student drive or wherever you're saving them. Google Drive is the smartest choice for photo warehousing at present.
