Romans 7:1-6
An Illustration From Marriage
1Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law—that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? 2For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.
4So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. 5For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. 6But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
St. Paul tells the Romans, in his letter, that the wages of sin is death...The Law of Moses shows us and exposes our sins...The Law of Moses were over the Israeli's for their entire life...Paul gives the example of the law (being over a man his entire life) with marriage...When a man marries a woman, the law bound to her husband and her as long as he is alive...But if her husband dies, then she is released from the law of marriage...If she marries another man, while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress...But if her husband dies, she is not an adulteress...The law, because of her husband's death, is released...She can marry another man and this is no sin...The law was over the husband and wife their entire lives, but since the husband died she is released from the law...
The old way is the Law of Moses...The law condemned us...But the body of Christ died for us and our sins and was resurrected...Those who believe in the Son brings fruit to the Father...We are now released from the Law of Moses and are saved by His death...And now by His death, we serve in a new way, the way of the Spirit...
As long as the Law of Moses existed, before Jesus, we were subject to be obedient of the law...If we were not obedient to the law then we are sinners, and the wages of sin is death...But now Jesus is here... Jesus died for us...He specifically died for each one of our sins...The law shows us our sins...Men live, we sin, and then we die...For the people who did not know the law, lived and then died...If they did not know the law they might not think they sinned, but they still lived and died...Jesus came and died for each one of us, yet we still sin...But He frees the sinner from the law of Moses...He also frees us from death...He gives us eternal life...He takes away our sins and our death, with His death and resurrection...The law condemned us, but Jesus saves us from sin and death...
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God's love and grace frees us from this death...He gives us eternal life in Jesus Christ...We are taught whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe in Him stands condemned because He has not believed in the name of God's One and Only Son...For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save the world through Him (John 3:17-18)...
