Tips for Parents Who Are In College

Learning Strategies are not only about how to study.  They are about what we do to support our studying and subsequent success in college.

Manage your time. If you aren't intentional about scheduling time for studying, kids, and all the other important parts of life you'll quickly find yourself falling behind. Know & Use Your Resources. Don't try to do this alone. Check resources at your school, in your community, in your family. Develop relationships with other parents in school. Take Care of Yourself. Take time to relax, as it benefits you and sets a good example for your kids. Have Realistic Expectations for Yourself. Classes are designed for traditional students with no children and more time to study. Employers will ask about your degree, not your grade. Keep Your Eye on the Prize. When things get tough, and they will, take time to remember why you are doing this. Better job equals better life for you and your kids, and you are setting a good example for them.

Cut yourself a break!

If you were up all night with a sick child or were so exhausted from work that you could not complete your homework assignment, that's life. Make sure your instructor knows about your situation.  Your instructor might give you some help or cut you a break.
