Who are the characters in the poem? List them with their pet names.
Answer:A girl named Belinda,
A little black kitten named Ink,
A little grey mouse named Blink,
A dog named Mustard (Yellow), and
A coward dragon named Custard.
Why did Custard cry for a nice safe cage? Why is the dragon called a 'cowardly dragon'?
Answer:Custard is timid and a coward. The other pets and Belinda herself made fun of him, so he always demanded a safe cage for himself. Belinda tickled him unmercifully. Ink and Blink commented on his looks and pretended to be brave stating that they could chase lions down the stairs. Mustard was very sharp and kept asking the dragon's age to irritate him and compare himself to a tiger in rage. Perhaps, the dragon had lost its confidence.
Describe the appearance of the dragon.
Answer:The dragon had big sharp teeth and its skin pointed towards the top like spikes. At the lower part, it had scales meant to protect the skin. His mouth resembled a fireplace as if it releases fire from the mouth. His nose is compared to a chimney to blow out the smoke and his toes look like a sharp knife as if it has been fitted by a dagger.
This poem is light-hearted. Give reasons.
Answer:All the characters have names that rhyme with each other.
They are all defined to be brave except the dragon.
The poet has used words to enhance the rhyme scheme.
Eg: Belinda - Winda, household - mouseholed.
Bravery is spontaneous. Explain the statement with reference to the poem.
Answer:Bravery is not a quality to be claimed like the other pet animals in the poem but needs to be spontaneous, arising in times of distress, Custard initially commanded no respect from Belinda on account of his cowardice, but when the armed pilot attacked the house, approaching Belinda with a pistol, all others panicked for shelter, and it was the dragon who savagely attacked the pirate and gobbled him and saved Belinda.
Comment on the attitude of other animals.
Answer:They realised the dragon's worth, and started respecting him. After a while, they boasted that they were braver, and could have handled the situation in a better way.
Metaphor: Belinda was as brave as a barrel full of bears, etc...
Repetition: With a little black kitten and a little grey mouse, etc...
