To test the presence of starch in leaves.
Fresh leaves, water bath, beakers, tripod stand, burner, wire gauze, water, ethyl alcohol(absolute spirit), Iodine solution.
Collect 3-4 leaves from the plant, which was under the Sun for at least 3 hours.
Boil the leaves in a beaker for 10 minutes to soften the cell wall.
Remove the leaves and take them into a test tube containing absolute alcohol. Boil the test tube in the bathtub for 15 minutes. Observe the colour of the alcohol and the leaves.
Remove the leaves and wash them with cold water. Add a few drops of Iodine solution and wait for 5 minutes.
Observe the colour change of the leaves and record your observations.
Alcohol turned to green colour and the leaf turned to white colour.
After adding Iodine solution, the leaf turned a blue-black colour, which indicates the presence of starch in the leaf.
Light is essential for photosynthesis. It helps to prepare starch in leaves.
Use fresh leaves which were under the Sun for at least 3-4 leaves.
Experiment carefully as ethyl alcohol is highly inflammable.
The beaker with ethanol should not be heated directly.
