How is Ausable different from other secret agents?
Answer:
Ausable's appearance was different from other secret agents in many ways. He has a small room in a musty corridor of a gloomy French hotel. It was on the sixth and top floor and was scarcely a setting for any kind of romantic adventure. Ausable was extremely fat. Despite living in Paris for 20 years, he still spoke with an American accent. Instead of messages being shared with him by his secretary, he received telephone calls to make an appointment. In all these ways, he was different from other secret agents.
Who was Fowler? Why was he disappointed seeing Ausable? What thrill did he experience that day?
Answer:
Fowler was a writer and had come to meet Ausable to interview him. Initially, he was disappointed by seeing Ausable, because he did not fit any description of a secret Agent.
On entering the room, he saw a man holding a small automatic pistol pointing towards them. He was surprised to find Ausable not panicky at this sight. He came to know that something thrilling would happen for him to write.
How and why did Max come inside Ausable's room? How did Ausable react later?
Answer:
Max came inside Ausable's room, using a passkey. He had come to get the secret report about some new missiles which he was sure, was with Ausable.
When he found Max waiting for him in the room, he casually asked him if he had entered through the balcony below his window. To convince his false story, he also said that it was the second time in a month that somebody has got into his room the same way.
Do you think Ausable's plan worked out?
Answer:
Ausable fabricated the story about the existence of the balcony leading to the next room. He made him believe and targeted the hotel manager for not blocking the passage, Hearing the knock on the door, Max, in an attempt to hide from the police, jumped quickly out of the window and fell to his death. Thus, Ausable's plan to get rid of Max without moving a muscle was a success.
