This poem effectively depicts the thoughts of a teenager when he/she feels that his/her freedom is curtailed. Parents instruct the children to do or not to do a certain thing but the children treat them as interference on their privacy.
How old do you think Amanda is? How do you know this?
Answer:Amanda's age could be between eleven to thirteen years. The poem gives us references to a mermaid and Rapunzel, which are stories read by the children of this age group.
Who do you think is speaking to her?
Answer:One of her parents is speaking to her. It is a general perception that mothers are who advise the children on these aspects, so, I think it is the mother speaking to her.
What is parenthesis?
Answer:It is a remark added to a sentence. they are often used to provide an explanation, in stanzas 2, 4, and 6. The lines describe the reactions of Amanda towards her mother's continuous nagging.
What could Amanda do if she were a mermaid?
Answer:When Amanda's mother scolded her for biting her nails, and slouching her shoulders while walking, she listened to it half-heartedly. Shen then became busy daydreaming about herself being a mermaid, she imagined that her life would be very relaxing in the sea as she would be taken away with the currents of water and enjoy freedom.
Is Amanda an orphan? Why does she say so?
Answer:Amanda is not an orphan, as she is constantly being pointed out by her mother to finish her homework, clean up her room and clean her shoes. She feels that it would have been much better and more peaceful if she had been an orphan as no one would bother her.
Do you know the story of Rapunzel? Why does she want to be Rapunzel?
Answer:Rapunzel is a pretty girl who is captured by a wicked witch and imprisoned in a high tower. Amanda relates herself to her and feels life in the tower will be very calm, tranquil, and peaceful and she will never let her hair down for anyone to climb as she wants to live in solitude.
What does the girl yearn for? What does this poem tell you about Amanda?
Answer:Amanda yearns for freedom and peace. She is constantly reminded to follow the code of good behaviour. The parents forget that she is no longer a child and can take her own decisions.
This poem therefore tells us about parents' interference in a teenager's life only because they want their child to be well-mannered and obedient. Amanda seems not to understand this.
Do you think Amanda is sulky and moody?
Answer:In my opinion, Amanda is not moody. She feels oppressed because of her parents' continuous nagging. She is always under constraint for the pressure of trying to be well-behaved as per her parents' demands. To escape from these, she starts daydreaming.
