In his short career as a thief, Hari Singh had made a study of men's faces when they had lost their goods. He concluded that the greedy man showed fear, the rich man showed anger & the poor man showed acceptance. But Anil, a kind & helpful person, would feel sad about being cheated.

What are Hari Singh's reactions to the prospect of receiving an education? 

Hari Singh was allowed to get an education with Anil's help. He knew the value of education & understood that if he learned to read and write, the possibilities to earn an honest living would be endless. Initially, he was willing to read& write only to win Anil's confidence. Later, when he saw Anil earning money by writing, he realized the prospects of receiving an education.

Why doesn't Anil hand over the thief to the police? In what ways do you feel Anil is different from other employers? 

Anil was a person who understood human nature & its complexities. He had probability figured out that Hari Singh was still in the habit of stealing. Anil had noticed Hari Singh pocketing a rupee a day. When Anil gave him money to buy a few things, that did not stop him from believing that unconditional faith in another person can bring about significant changes. Therefore, when Anil found the notes damp, he might have realized what would have happened the previous night. But he was empathetic to not question Hari Singh about it or complain to the police. Most employers would have resorted to a more straightforward solution of handing over a dishonest person to the authority. Being kind, Anil did not believe in such conditions & proved he was right as Hari Singh transformed in the end.
