The poem revolves around the concept that human emotions are destructive.
The poet presents two possibilities about the end of the world. Fire stands for greed, desire& ice stands for hatred& fury. In the first few lines, he believes ice would equally lead to silent ages. The poem artistically conveys the philosophy that if we let our emotions rule the world and we don't have control over them, it will surely ring us all on the verge of total chaos and destruction.
What would happen to the world if the climate grew hotter or colder?
Answer:The heat of the sun will emit a lot of heat & gases around the atmosphere & will destroy all the living things on the planet. Similarly, the freezing cold waves will silently damage the human/living species bringing an end to the world. Anything with an end has a beginning. So, the world would end in either of the two ways.
What do 'Fire and Ice' stand for? What are contrasting ideas the poet wants to convey?
Answer:Fire symbolically means too much hatred and intolerance. According to the poet, the world will end due to fire. But, if the world had to end twice then it would end because of ice. Only compassion & equality will bring peace to the world.
