Who is the real culprit in the story?
Answer:
The real culprit is the lady who tricked Horace into believing her and took away all the jewels that were kept in the locker.
At what point in the story you realised that the lady was not the person he claimed to be?
Answer:
Firstly, it was strange enough for the lady of the house to remain unusually calm to see Horace in the house.
Secondly, she did not call the police and instead asked Horace to open the safe for her stating that she had forgotten the password.
Therefore it is evident for us to suspect that she was not the person he claimed to be.
How did Horace get deceived then?
Answer:
The confidence with which the lady behaved in the presence of Horace was enough to make him believe that she was the lady of the house. Her bright makeup, her appearance and the way she posed, and her habit of smoking were convincing enough to deceive Horace.
Horace Danby was good and respectable but not completely honest. Justify the statement.
Answer:
Horace's purpose for stealing money was only to buy books, and he did this once a year. He also had a business of making locks and keys, and it ran successfully. So, he could be called a good and respectable person. He was not honest, though, as he robbed other people's wealth to satisfy his desires. So, he is an offender here.
Horace Danby is meticulous but in this attempt, he faltered. How?
Answer:
Horace collected a lot of information about the house, the wiring in the house, and the location of the valuable items. But, he failed to get enough information about the occupants of the house. He was smart enough to know the dog's actual name but overlooked getting information about the owner's age. He landed in trouble later as he gave way to carelessness to open the safe without wearing gloves.
What do you understand by the phrase 'honour among thieves'?
Answer:
There is a moral code among thieves that they should not commit crimes against one another and keep away from doing anything illegal against the one engaged in the same act. In this lesson, Horace was tricked by a lady who was also a thief present in the same house. She was cleverer and got the jewels effortlessly and went scot-free.
