Familiar Arena (Dueling Grounds) is a game mode that can be found under the PVP menu. It pits your team of familiars against other players' teams. The battles themselves function the same as the battles in Familiar Search. You earn an entry ticket once every four hours, and can hold up to 5 tickets at a time. You can also purchase additional tickets with diamonds.
You will need to create two teams:
Attack team. This is the team you use to fight other players' teams. Depending on how you wish to play, you can create a powerful all-rounder team and send them in each fight, or you can change them continuously based on what your next opponent's team looks like.
Defense team. When other players attack your team, they will fight the defensive team. Since you have no control when other players fight your team, you should choose a powerful all-rounder team that can function in many types of fights. You have the option to obscure up to two of your defensive team members to make it harder for your opponents to formulate a good team to fight you.
Note that the teams are indendent entities. The same familiar can be on both teams. You cannot put multiple copies of the same familiar on a team.
The entry page for Dueling Grounds displays your attack team and the defense team of your next opponent, along with both of your current rankings and team power levels.
In the top right you can see your current amount of tickets and how long until they refresh.
Tapping on the blue button on the bottom left of the screen will bring up your team selection screen. Here you can set your attack team (left tab) and defense team (right tab).
Each team is made up of 5 familiars. Add/remove members by tapping on their inventory icon. You can see how this affects your team's power level in the bottom left. Make sure to hit confirm before exiting this screen.
You can choose to fight the opponent on the screen by hitting the ticket icon in the bottom center of the main screen. However, if their rank/build/power level look too daunting, you can change your opponent by tapping on the blue button in the bottom right.
The opponent selection screen will show a list of possible choices, their rank, team build, and power level. Tap on the button in the right column to start a duel with that opponent.
After the fight completes, if you return to the opponent selection screen, it will be the same except the previous opponent will be unselectable (you will see the battle result in that column instead.) You will need to chose another opponent from the list.
If you don't want to fight anyone in this list, you can shuffle the list for free, once every two hours, by tapping the button in bottom right. A new list of opponents will be generated.
If you wish to shuffle the list within the two hour time period, you will need to spend diamonds.
Once the fight starts, you can't do anything except watch. You can speed up the animation by tapping the 2x icon (to speed up by 2x or 4x) or skip it altogether, like in the Familiar Search Mode.
Note: This screenshot is from an earlier version fo the game when the skip function was not yet added.
Whether you win or lose, you will earn 6 familiar constellation pieces and 6 PVP (green) tokens. However, your rank will rise or fall based on the result. Hit the button in the middle to exit the fight, or the button on the right to move on to the next fight.
Note: this screenshot is from an earlier version of the game when you only got 3 of each item as a reward for the fight.
Ranking highly provides several benefits.
Earn PVP tokens, familiar constellation pieces, and gold based on the highest rank you achieved each week (resets every Monday)
Earn PVP tokens, high level familiar constellation pieces, and gold based on your final rank at the end of the season (typically a month's period)
Purchase 4* Light familiar, Birdon, in the PVP tokens shop. Each purchase is locked behind being at specific ranks (gold 3, platinum 3, master, or legend).
