Chaos Dungeons are special dungeons designed for farming specific items, primarily magic skill pages and magic skill books, normal accessories (up to 3*), gemstones, and black magic crystals. Unlike monsters in field zones, monsters in chaos dungeons will immediately swarm and attack any player who gets too close, and monsters respawn quickly after being defeated, so caution should be taken. Entering with a party or joining a pickup party is a good way to farm more safely and efficiently, although the party should not be too large as you may defeat monsters faster then they respawn.
Each zone in the chas dungeon has specific spawns and drops, so you can plan ahead to determine which areas to farm, and what buildout you want to have before entering.
The fourth floor of each chaos dungeon is home to a chaos dungeon field boss. Like normal field bosses, they spawn at specific times per day, and provide rewards based on your contribution, with extra rewards going to top contributors. The game will suggest you join a party (if you're not already part of one) if you enter the fourth floor of any chaos dungeon.
REMINDER: If you are 8+ levels higher than the monsters you are fighting, their rate for rare drops (the stuff you are trying to farm) will go down to zero. You will want to be near or at the level of the monsters in the zone you are fighting. One method to continue farming lower level zones of chaos dungeons is to send in one of your subclasses to farm. Because your subclasses benefit from all the base stat boosts you've put into your character, they will be very strong relative to their level and can farm lower level zones with ease while still being able to earn drops.
WARNING: All floors of chaos dungeons are PK-enabled zones. Be cautious when entering these floors.
There are currently four available dungeons. You will need to be at a specific base level in order to unlock and access each one.
The Chaos Dungeon selection screen is accessed from the Challenges menu, allowing you to teleport to each dungeon's entrance. You can also walk directly to each dungeon from its location in the field.
The Ancient Ruins, located in the Eastern Heartlands, can be accessed once you hit level 25.
The Sky Pirates Airship Facility, located on Allegra Plateau, can be accessed once you hit level 55.
A third dungeon is available for players who are level 102 or higher. This dungeon, "Past Castle of Aquaris", cannot be entered from the field. You must use the chaos dungeon menu to access this dungeon.
A fourth dungeon is available for players who are level 115 or higher, in the ruins of Castle Atrasia (behind where field boss Kariya's Phantom spawns).
There are several pieces of equipment that make farming in chaos dungeons easier and/or more profitable.
Raider Armor is a normal 4* armor that reduces damage recieved from chaos dungeon monsters.
Zest Gloves are a normal 4* glove that boosts the exp gained from defeating enemies, great for level grinding on the side.
Bounty Boots are a normal 4* boot that boosts gold drops, great for money grinding on the side.
Don't forget to use drop rate boosting items if you have them! Energy drinks (green) boost drop rates, gold rates, and exp by 700%. Sweet drinks (magenta) boost drop rates by 500%. There are a number of dishes also that boost drop rates and/or gold rates. Each of these items lasts for 30 minutes; consuming multiple copies of an item will extend the time period the buff is active.
Farming in a party is also recommended. The more people in the party, the higher the party buff to gold and item drop rates are, starting from 3% (with two people) to 12% (with 5 people.)
Farming in chaos dungeons is dull work. However, once you establish your character in a zone, buff them up in the ways you want, and are filled up with HP potions (especially if your character is taking a lot of damage and doesn't have another way to heal), you can toggle autobattle and let the game farm for you. Make sure the zone for autobattle is set appropriately -- too small and your character might not clear out all the monsters in your vicinity; too large and you might aggro monsters from too many zones that will overwhelm you. A good size encompasses the respawn zone of the monsters you're fighting, but doesn't give your character a chance to venture too far away.
You can also turn on AI Mode to have the game automatically farm materials for you.
