Engineer is a long range class that can function as either a healer/supporter or as a burst damage dealer/debuffer.
Engineer's primary battle style, rifle, is a healing and support class. Although her attack, defense, and speed are mediocre at best, she has multiple healing and buff skills and the only resurrection ability in the game. This allows you to play a unique support role in parties, especially in content where you can't normally revive (i.e. Lava Valley Brawl, Interstellar dungeons). In solo play, your sustain abilities are often enough to let you chip away at difficult content, even if you need to rely on run-and-gun tactics to let your cooldowns reset.
Engineer's secondary battle style, gatling gun, removes most of her healing and support abilities in exchange for increased attack and speed, and gives her numerous debuffs instead. In both solo and party play, the increased DPS allows you to burst down dangerous enemies, assuming your potions and/or healing familiars can cover any damage you're taking.
Each battle style has 3 normal attack skills, which can be leveled up as engineer gains levels. Levels carry over between styles. Normal attack skills deal damage of the element of your active weapon.

Damage is done in a large area surrounding the targeted enemy. Enemies are stunned for 1 second.

Engineer fires 3 large bullets in a narrow straight line in front of her. The third bullet will stun an enemy for 1 second.
At level 1:
Each hit inflicts 52% + 26 element damage

Each hit inflicts 78% + 5,300 element damage
Each battle style has 1 passive skill which provides a set amount of buffs to complement its primary play style.
Boosts the following stats when in Rifle Battle Style:
Reduces taken damage by 7%
Increases attack speed by 7%
Increases max HP by 5%
Increases amount of healing done to self and party with healing skills by 5%
Boosts the following stats when in Gatling Battle Style:
Increases damage dealt by 10%

Burst skills are leveled up with each class rank earned. Levels are applied to both rifle and gatling styles. Burst attack skills deal damage of the element of your active weapon.
Summons two cannons which fire and do elemental damage in a long, wide column in front of the Engineer. Extra damage is dealt to monsters. Also heals self and party for a moderate amount of HP.
At level 1:

Surrounds engineer with a healing field that gradually heals you and your party members who stand within it up to 8 times.
At level 1:
Heals you and your party members for 1.5% of their max HP up to 8 times.
At level 10:
Heals you and your party members for 3% of their max HP up to 8 times.

Heals self for a moderate amount of HP; revives downed party members. Revived members have damage nullified for a brief time, and the cooldowns for their familiar and special skills reduced by a moderate amount.

Revives downed party members and provides the following buffs to them:
Nullifies damage for 2s
Decreases cooldown for familiar and special active skills by 7.5s

Vines grow in a long narrow column in front of engineer, dealing up to 3 hits of wood damage. The first 2 hits will knock back enemies; the third hit will knock down enemies.

At level 10:
