A verb consisting of three radicals is called a الفعل الثلاثي .

ِA verb consisting of four radicals is called a الفعل الرباعي.

A verb in Arabic may be either المجرد or المزيد.

1. A المجرد verb has only three letters if it is a الثلاثي and only four letters if it is a الرباعي, and no extra letters have been added to them in order to modify the meaning.

   1. eg: سلم, زلزل

2. In a المزيد verb one or more letters have been added to the radicals in order to modify the meaning

   1. الفعل الثلاثي from سلم

      1. سلم, سالم, تسلم, أسلم, استسلم

   2. الفعل الرباعي from زلزل

      1. تزلزل

   3. الأبواب of the الفعل المجرد 

      1. سجد يسجد, جلس يجلس, فتح يفتح, فهم يفهم, قرب يقرب, ورث يرث
