ABCs of Art & Spotting them

(Optional Project)

The ABCs of Art are Everywhere

We will explore using our ABCs of Art. Each art piece is like a special recipe with the artist choosing the ingredients.

In this session, we will explore creating our own works of art using very simple elements of art, sharing with each other, and then looking at many different art pieces for these elements.

Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Miro show us the elements or "ABCs" of art, can you spot them?

These artists that we call Modern Artists that you just saw are VERY FAMOUS!!

People love their lines and color because they were some of the first artists to draw and paint in this way! They tried new things! Each painting is simple but so different and special!

Today in class you are going to create your own ABCs of art - Lines-Shapes-Color

In class, Parents pass out the ABCs of Art Sheets, white paper, and Markers.

Step 1: PREP - Each student gets a white paper and markers (parents put labels on the back when time allows).

Step 2: Teachers will read the Element of Art directions to the students.

And, students follow the instructions based on what they hear (not necessary what their neighbor hears).

  • With Black Marker - Draw 4 lines from one edge to another.
  • With Any Marker - Draw 1 line with a big curve from the right side over to the middle
  • With Any Marker - Draw 2 other lines of any type (on your sheet)
  • With a Red Marker and a Yellow Marker - Draw 5 circles anywhere on your paper and fill them in.
  • With a Blue Marker - Draw a star shape
  • Last Any Marker - Fill in any areas with swirls, color, lines, circles (this time just go for about 5-10min)

Step 3: All the art is collected 15min before the session is up so that there is an ART SHOW of each sheet for the students afterward. Share and show how different and special the art is eventhough they are all using the same instructions with different colors.
