The beauty of art is that it usually has all the ABCs of Art (the Elements of Art). The ABCs of Art include: Lines/Shape/Color/Texture/Size/Value. We will explore all of the elements in the classroom using air dry clay.
Elements of Art Handout
Clay has been important for our history and for our use. Many years ago, people used clay to make bowls, cups, and tools for everyday important use. We've also learned so much about history, dinosaurs, and many other forms of nature from clay. Fossils, which are mineral and clay imprints of bones (not the actual bones), are preserved within layers of clay and dirt over many many years. Today we are going to make imprints in clay just like fossils!
Project Description
We will use Crayola Model Magic white clay for exploration. Students can explore and create a clay medallion using shapes, colors, and textures. This clay will not dry if in a plastic bag, but will dry over night if left out.
Supplies Provided-
1 small packet of white clay for each student
Ziplock baggie with name labels to take home
washable markers to "mix" color in the clay
texture objects (man made and natural)
We will break this down into 3 main parts: (please start/stop the video as desired and have students save half of the white clay in the bag as we only need half for the walk through together).
As desired, this video can be played in each class by the teacher and can be paused for each part (Shape/Color/Texture).
(1) Shapes!!
Ball/Circle "pancake"
Cube/Square
Triangle/Heart
Ovals/Rectangles
Other (Boat/Cone etc)
(2) Color!!
Using Washable Marker (Any)
Draw and fold in the color like a taco. Then knead and mix to make marble color!
(3) Textures - Man-Made or Natural Objects, can you tell which is which? We use textures to create imprint or design in the clay.
Last, students can take this air dry clay home as a finished project (a dish, coaster, art piece, magnet, pendant, etc) or just as clay to explore and build. This product is crayola Model Magic and it will dry as its designed if left out. Enjoy! (Please return any markers, all objects, and any unused bags back to Art Cart).
