Line Monsters

Its the ABCs or Elements of Art time!!!

Its time again to get smART with our ABCs of Art! Lines are the "A"s of Art, the most basic beginning.

Often we draw straight or "bumpy" lines without thinking of all the fun styles we could put into our drawings with different lines. The most famous line for being drawn so many times.... is the.... HORIZON line!!! It separates sky and ground right?

Well, just think if we could draw different lines to make our drawings say much more!!  How about a very wavy line for water or ADD small peaks in a straight line for grass. Or, how about using Zig-Zags for Mountains or Teeth!

Today we will explore these lines and how they show our viewer something a bit more detailed than a straight line alone can.

HANDOUT: Lines sheets in Class (2-3 per student to see)

This is a great video line song for 2:31 minutes.

PROJECT TIME!

Step 1 - Create our own character or line monster out of funny and silly lines.

If we just did straight lines they would be a little less silly or interesting.  But, when we use different lines it makes each monster character come to life with more details.

The lines can make the monsters look like they have fur or hair or cold robot metal teeth etc.

ALSO please notice we use markers to outline and crayons to shade. We want bold marker lines to show thru and use those crayons to shade in.

Oh! Don't forget to name your monster character!

This is Chew32 and DD8.

After you create your character we are going to practice drawing a scene for them. Do they like water or the city or do they like a baseball park? Do they go to Monsters University what does that look like?

Step 2 is to use 3-4 lines across the big paper to show a scene.

(1) Maybe a line for clouds or sky or rain/lighting.

(2) A line for mountains, castles, skyscrapers, water.

(3) A line for ground or grass or road lines?

When you complete these tasks..... you have just done a true illustration! An illustration is a drawing with details that tell a story!!

Start at 2:20 go till 6:40 for line monster or all 8min for both line monster and scenery

Prep: Pre-cut the monster papers to 3"x6"
