Pop Art
Pop Art originated in the 1950's, around the time your grandparents were born. This art form takes everyday objects, such as pop bottles, soup cans or music covers, and turns them into works of art. Using items found in popular culture as the subject matter, and using a magazine advertisement style with bright colors, is what Pop Art is most known for.
When you think of Pop Art, the name Andy Warhol may come to mind, as he is one of the most well-known artists of this kind. He was born in 1928 and was often ill and had to stay inside. So he grew up listening to the radio and collecting pictures of movie stars. This may be where he drew some of his inspiration for his art.
Later, Andy Warhol worked in advertising where he would create and illustrate ads for magazines that grabbed the reader's attention. He first became famous for his work in designing a shoe advertisement. Which is what you will be drawing today! After shoes, he went on to design music covers, create his own art exhibits and was even hired to paint portraits of famous actresses and other celebrities.
Take a look at some of his artwork below to find some inspiration for your own shoe "advertisement".
Project Description:
Today students will receive a 9x12 sheet of paper and a shoe stencil to create the shape of a shoe, either a sneaker or high heel. They will use colored pencils to design and decorate their own shoe just like Andy Warhol. The students need to make sure to fill in the whole shoe with color and details. Really encourage creativity and color so each shoe is different.
Wording can be added for brand names, school names, etc.
Supplies:
Parent note: Please help by keeping all pencils sharp for the students and for the next session. Additionally, if students finish up with plenty of time remaining, encourage the students to name their shoe or add detail. There is always more to add like laces, or outlining or darkening that can be done to enhance the look of the shoe (what shadow would be under the shoe, can they give it a 3D look)?
