3D Form

Today we are learning more about advanced Elements of ART:

  • Advanced SHAPE called FORM
  • SPACE & SIZE called perspective and
  • VALUE which is shading.

So, how do we go from 2D SHAPE to 3D FORM on paper?

2 Dimensional is what it says 2 dimensions

  1. up & down (VERTICAL) and
  2. left & right or (HORIZONTAL)

Example: A square or rectangle is 2D

3 Dimensional is 3 dimensions

  1. up & down (VERTICAL) and
  2. left & right or (HORIZONTAL)
  3. short & tall or (how deep something is)

Example: A CUBE

What makes art interesting and amazing is you can have a drawing on 2D paper look 3D by adding in lines for the third dimension! Here are some fun art pieces for you to see.

MC Escher Reptiles and Handmade shows us 2D to 3D transition on paper with bending lines.

Ben Heine - Ben is a Belgian artist famous in 2010 of a new art form titled "Pencil Vs Camera". Its a great ADVANCED example of 2D and 3D and film dimension.

The tip with this type of drawing is using one point perspective a dot to draw the eye to.

Together in the LGI we will get a great start on this.

Step 1: Draw the 1-point perspective dot in the CENTER of the paper

Step 2: Using the Hexagon or Rectangle BIG shapes stencil around 5-6 (this timed is about 2-3mins of student time)

Step 3: Connect all corners FACING the dot to the dot with a straight edge, please show straight lines (its best). This usually takes at least another 2-3mins together.

Step 4: Shading DARK ON THE SHAPE and LIGHTER toward the dot. (Students will do this back in class not in LGI).

Okay, the rest we will do back in class with our teachers, but before we do... Here are some more finished examples....

In this session, we will meet students in the LGI and will practice drawing together using the following supplies required to BRING to LGI (we need to be sure to EMAIL TEACHERS AHEAD):

  • White board as something hard to write on
  • #2 pencil sharpened from class & eraser
  • Blue/Green ruler/compass stencils from 3rd grade classes (shown below)
  • smART will provide white copy paper (both in LGI and extra for class)
  • smART - colored pencils
