Faith Ringgold was born October 8th, 1930 at Harlem Hospital in New York City. As a small child Faith was frequently sick with asthma, making physical activities difficult to do. Because of this, art soon became her favorite hobby.
Once she graduated from the City College of New York, Faith began teaching art in the New York Public Schools. She would continue to teach for the next 18 years while also spending time painting and traveling.
Faith Ringgold began her art career as a painter. Later in life she was best known for her painted story quilts-art that combines painting, quilted fabric, and story telling. She has also written and illustrated 11 children's books. Her most famous, Tar Beach, was a Caldecott Honor Book and winner of the Corretta Scott King Award for illustration. Faith Ringgold passed away in 2024 with her art and books continuing to tell her stories.

Project Description: Today students will be making their own story quilts with pencils and fabric!
Goal: Inspired by an American Artist, we work to draw details of a story to explain a memory using the Color and Texture elements of art. What details are in this story? (ie a red striped umbrella, 3 base ball players wearing hats, or a blue dress).
Step 1: Using a glue stick, attach fabric around the edges to create a quilt border.
Step 2: Think of an important event or thing that has happened in your life. Using colored pencils, draw this memory on the quilt sheet. Fill the page as much as you can with color. This is your "story!"
Parent Helpers Note: Encourage students to draw one of their favorite memories. A time spent on the beach with family, playing football with friends, or reading a favorite book in a cozy room are all examples of our most memorable memories or favorite past times.
Supplies List: - Prep Note: Consider doing fabric first, or be sure there is no drawing where the fabric goes.
