Agamograph

Agamographs distort images for the viewer as they move past.

Yaacov Agam, an Israeli artist and sculpter born in 1928 and still living today, created a new way of presenting images in 3D and this type of presentation he uses in his sculptures has been termed an Agamograph. Its an optical and kinetic art that gives the viewer many perspectives on the same sculpture as they walk past it. He has helped design buildings, fountains, and many scuptures of art that are kinetic or change as a result from motion or movement.

Today's Project!!

Step1 - Each student draws 5 lines that are 1" apart from each other on 2 different 6x6 papers provided ahead of time (this should all be done AHEAD of smART but smART volunteers will bring extras). Each student needs this pre-done so that it creates 2 sheets with 6 strips on one side only. NOTE: For the next part BE SURE LINES GO UP AND DOWN when flipping over.

Step 2 - Using a marker draw 2 simple drawings that contrast one another (are opposites). Then, draw one on the clean paper of each. This should be simple otherwise you could run out of time for the project. Some examples sun/moon, rain/sun, city buildings/trees, happy emoji/sad emoji, animal/robot, etc.

Step 3 - Cut the drawings into strips and glue them ALTERNATING order on the accordian template provided.

Here are some more fun examples.

Prep Notes and Information:

Paper - Prepared tagboard templates that measure 6"x12" folded at every 1" and 2 - 6"x6" square sheets for drawing and markers.

Teacher Assist -

(1) Teachers have each student mark their 2 - 6"x6" square sheets with 1" strips (6). Don't cut these yet.

(2) Teachers will provide class supplies for straight edges with ruler measurements, scissors, and glue. Its a good idea to email teachers ahead to make sure they have supplies ready.

(3) SmART will bring the templates all pre-done and markers and crayons.
