Hi 3rd graders!! Welcome back to Horizon smART. Last year we did so many fun projects (do you remember)?
This year we are going to explore COLOR the 3rd Element of Art. Today we are going to paint and let you create and NAME your very own colors!!
How did humans first learn about color and define the colors we know and learn today?
- It actually goes as far back as the Egyptians and to the great scholar in history Aristotle. We have LOVED using color for thousands and thousands of years!
- About 350 years ago, Sir Isaac Newton was an English Mathematician, Astronomer, and Physicist (who published experiments in 1672). Wow, that is a lot of professions... he's probably pretty smART!! He identified how a triangle prism separates white light into color once the light is bent.
What colors do you see coming out of the prism? What colors do you see on the wheel?

Questions to pose for 3rd grade:
- Do you remember what colors are primary? What colors are secondary?
- How about which ones are warm or cool?
- So, now what do you think a peppermint color looks like? How do you make it?
In this session we will CREATE BRAND NEW colors and use white paint for shadings for all sorts of colors.
- Each student will receive a plate with red, yellow, blue, and white paint to mix with 10 Qtips.
- Each student will receive a color sheet, don't forgot to put your name on the top. With this sheet, you will get to show and NAME up to 9 different colors.
- While mixing, use the paint and Qtips using pointillism or some form of painting and meet up with teachers to create an interesting collaborative circle canvas using hot/cool colors using different shades to see how the collaborative masterpiece develops!
Parent Prep - While students are in the LGI, parents will be putting together the plates above as shown with red, blue, and yellow and white in the middle as well as give each student about 10 Qtips and a sheet for naming colors.

- White Canvas 9x12 for each class,
- Paper plates,
- Paint (red, blue, yellow, white),
