Today we are learning how to use coils with clay to build pots or sculpture.
Coils are a quick way to get even or equally proportionate layers on a pot and also add a textured or patterned look to clay. Coils are "snakes" made by rolling clay to about pinky thickness and joining them. There are many ways artists use coils to build pots. With the type of model clay we will use, we won't join or smoothe the coils but instead let them show. These pots below show how coils look when they are not smoothed together.
Today we are going to learn and practice the coil technique with Model Magic clay. Your coil creation will dry overnight. We challenge you to make something with coils, either a coffee mug, cupcake, ice cream or candy.
Step 1 - Each parent will now pass out a bag of white model magic to each student and markers. Students should break in half and half again (for 1/4 piece) and follow along with the teacher with the video with about 1/4 piece of the clay so they work the "how to" piece with the video first. Teachers can start and stop the video as desired.
Step 2 - The VIDEO - There are 2 main parts...
(1) Coloring Clay and
(2) How to do a coil.
Step 3 - Students can now color their other pieces of clay and practice coils. They can color the pieces as desired and coil as desired with the bag of clay (1oz white package each).
We can't wait to display the pots, cupcakes, candies or treats created! We will send home after we display.
**Parent Note - Please put name label on the paper under the coil creation for display. Thanks!!!
