The beauty of art is that it usually possesses all the ABCs of Art (The Elements of Art). Today we will add to SHAPE with COLOR and TEXTURE. We will explore the element of color in the classroom using air dry clay!
The color wheel can be divided in half to show warm colors and cool colors. Yellow, red and orange are known as warm colors. When used in art, these colors give the feeling of warmth and happiness.
Green, blue, and purple are know are cool colors. These colors give the feeling of being cold and gloomy.
Van Gogh painted these sunflowers using warm colors.
In Starry Night, Van Gogh used cool colors.
When used side by side, warm and cool colors "Pop!" Van Gogh used both warm and cool colors to create Cafe Terrace at Night.
Project Description
We are going to use Crayola Model Magic clay for exploration. In this exploration you will be making a color wheel by mixing primary colors! This clay will not dry if in a plastic bag, but will dry over night if left out.
Supplies Provided-
.5 oz (half of a bag) of red, yellow, and blue clay for each student
Paper plates
small black squares of paper (for display)
ziplocks with name labels to take home
We will break this down step by step. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW EACH STEP IN ORDER AND NOT RUSH AHEAD! This will ensure that you will be able to create all the colors of the color wheel.
Everyone will get a blue, red, and yellow ball of clay.
Take each ball of clay and split it into 4 smaller balls.
This will become your color wheel!
Let's start by mixing together red and blue. What color will we get??
Place your purple ball onto your paper plate between the red and blue balls.
Tip: If your color looks marbled, it means it is not mixed enough! Mix until you have a solid color.
Let's see what happens when you mix red and yellow. Take one ball of yellow and one ball of red...Mix until your color is solid!
Place the orange ball onto your plate between yellow and red.
Next mix together one ball of yellow and one ball of blue. Let's see what you get...
Place the green ball onto your color wheel between yellow and blue.
Mix the remaining yellow, blue, and red balls together. Remember to mix them together until you have a solid color. What will you get??
Place this ball into the center of your color wheel.
Now that you have created your color wheel, it's time for some imagination! Using the colored balls from your wheel, you may create anything you wish. A dish, a figurine, an animal, or whatever you can think up! It can be many objects or just one. Here is what we made:
Warm and cool colors together to create a flower (red and green!) and a tree.
Can you name the warm colors used to make this snake? Are there any cool colors?
These colors on the toadstool "pop" because warm and cool colors were used together.
You can choose 1 item for display. It must fit onto the black square of paper provided. The remaining clay is for you to take home as a finished project or just as clay to explore and create with. It's crayola Model Magic and it will dry as its designed if it doesn't go back into the ziplock bag. Enjoy!
