Butterfly Symmetry
If you were a butterfly or dragonfly, what would you do or what kind of butterfly or dragonfly would you be?
Today we will create a Butterfly with Symmetric wings using Geometric and Free-Form Shapes
FIRST! Do you remember the Elements of Art in 1st Grade when we studied all kinds of Lines?
In 2nd Grade we will study and play with SHAPES!
Lets think about these shapes...
<= These GEOMETRIC shapes are STRAIGHT or a CIRCLE
<= These FREEFORM shapes are Bumpy or Wavy and like Nature
Step 1 - Students pick pre-cut black silhouette butterfly wings or dragonfly wings.
Step 2 - Students receive 4-6 geometric shapes any color. Students cut the rectangles into triangles by cutting corner to corner and place on the wings symmetrically. And, students glue these shapes on the butterfly or dragonfly so they are symmetrical.
Step 3 - Add Circle Stickers
Step 4: Cut freeform shapes with the pretty papers!
Anything freeform works as long as we stay symmetrical! Add Marker spots too!
Step 5 - If you were a butterfly or dragonfly what would you do?
Last Step - Parents or teachers collect and let dry at the back of classrooms and hang in the hallway!
