FAQs

What is Horizon smART? – There are currently no formal art education classes (or specials) for PHM elementary schools. Instead each school has an "Art Smart" program led by parents and supported by teachers. Horizon's program is called Horizon smART!

How does Horizon smART work? – Well, it won’t work without parents! Parents come to school for a 1 hour session to help with an art project that is inspired by class curriculum, a well known artist, and/or studying the elements of art. There are usually 9 sessions a year (one per month). You can sign up to attend any or all sessions. All help and interest is always welcome!

How can I help and sign up? – Go to our Signup Page and fill out the form (it can be done from your phone). It is only available in the FALL, after this you can email horizonartsmart@gmail.com anytime and we will get you to the grade leaders. You will need a volunteer as well as a volunteer form on file in the office. We communicate a great deal over web and email so having an email is necessary for updates and reminders and using this website will help.

What are the time commitments as a volunteer?

  • Class Helper – Class helpers simply arrive that day and help put out supplies provided, answer questions on the project, and clean up the classrooms. Its key to encourage all students especially those who are struggling to work thru the sessions. Time commitment is usually 1 hour per attended session. Its also recommended you review the session ahead online if you are helping so you know what to do the day of the session. Time is tight and this helps.
  • Grade leaders & Art Chair Positions – These volunteers help before and after the art sessions by making sure all grade classes have needed resources, coordinate with teachers on specific requests, and coordinate with the art chairs for the communication, logistics of the session, and displaying art. Time commitment varies.

What do I do the day of smART? – Prior to the day of, be sure to check out this website for information about the technique, artist, and project and read with your student at home too! At the time of arrival:

  1. Check in the office first to print a badge, then
  2. Meet in the LGI (large room on left after the gym) 10 min before the session begins.
  3. Then, head to the classroom you’ve signed up for and all supplies will be waiting for you to hand out.

How do I know what Art project we are doing? - Check this website for your grade. On the main grade page it will show the schedule. Then, click the project from the drop down that is on the grade home page schedule for the details/pictures/videos and how tos.

If I can’t come to classes, how can I help? – If you can’t come to class, donations are always welcome. But the BEST way to help away from school is encouragement from home by knowing the sessions ahead (which are on the calendar and on this website) and you can ask your student to research ahead with you to start getting their brains working on ideas and creativity and then to share their school experiences with you.

What if I have no art ability at all? – No problem, much of the help does not require any art experience just encouragement and help with the multi-media art projects. If you have a tough time with art, maybe you have good ideas to help those who feel the same way to try it? Art is not about what we can't do instead what we can do, when we let go of our worries and try.

What is Art To Remember? - For one week (usually in October) all the student's artwork from that session will be scanned by a third party company called Art To Remember so that memorabilia can be purchased of the art image. Many parents seem to like the magnets and coffee cups as an annual tradition and gifts for family.
