What is ZooKazam?

  • ZooKazam is an educational AR (Agumented Reality) application that allows students to learn about animals as well as witnessing virtual animals popping out of piece of paper in a photo realistic 3D animation. Students can also change the weather patterns on their virtual screens. While students are observing their virtual animal, they can listen to different features about the animal, fun facts, and information about the animal's habitat.

Step by Step Guide:

  1. Download "ZooKazam" app in Google Play or iTunes.
  2. Click "Sign up" and create your own free account
  3. Create your own username and password

  5. Open the App and tap animals
  6. You are going to pick what you want to use as your target (the place the animal will appear) and take a picture of it.
  7. Select your animal and then point your device that you are using at your target.
  8. Now you will see your animal come to life in 3-D. The app will give you information about the animal, you can move around the animal to see it from different angles and you can change the weather around the animal!

Benefits of Using This App:

  • There is a large variety of Augmented Reality animals to use from whales to insects. There are even dinosaurs that can be used. The list is updated regularly so this makes it super easy to find what you are looking for.
  • ZooKazam offers models of incredibly high quality. They are animated, accompanied by natural sound effects and include some striking visual detail.
  • There is detailed information given about the animals that you are using and you can change the climate of the animals.
  • The most obvious benefit of augmented reality in education is that it changes the way that students interact with their world and in turn; the way they learn their subject content.

Classroom Activities:

Kindergarten:

Standard: K-ESS3-1 Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals (including humans) and the places they live.

Activity: Have students pick one of the environments that we discussed previously in class (rainforest, swamp, dessert, ocean, mountain ranges), and then they will choose animals in the app that would live in that particular environment. After each student has chosen their environment and animal, we will share all the different choices with the whole class. There will be a class set of iPads for students to use.

Items Needed for Activity:

  1. ZooKazam app
  2. Previous knowledge of different environments
  3. iPad

3rd Grade:

Standard: 3-LS2-1 Construct and support an argument that some animals form groups that help members survive.

Activity: The students will be grouped by the teacher. Each group will be given a location to use and will have to show examples of animals that form groups to survive in that habitat (bees, school of fish, zebras, ants, etc.). Each group will share with the class once they have completed this activity. We will look at the different factors between the different groups of animals.

Items Needed for Activity:

  1. ZooKazam App
  2. iPad
  3. Location assigned by teacher
