Cyberchase Shape Quest

Cyberchase Space Quest is an app produced by PBS Kids. In this app, children will play games to help them learn shapes, some basic geometry skills that they will use later in life, as well as problem-solving and reasoning skills. It stars the main character of the hit kids show Cyberchase. Both the show and the game are geared towards early elementary aged kids.

The first game option is Feed The Critter. In Feed the Critters, students will toss fruit at the hingry creatures, however, to sucesfful feed the hungry critters, your child must dodge obsticals. This game helps reasoning and m

The second game is called Hide and Seek. To help expand your child's geometric vocabulary, all the critters hide behind different shapes and your child must find the right one. This will help your child learn shapes, counting skills, and some angles, as well as much more.

The third game is called Patch the Path. To play this game its required that you download a board game at http://pbskids.org/shapequest. With the board game and the AR feature, kids can play the game with their whole body. There are thirty levels and multiple environments so the fun will never end. This is the best part of the app, because it helps your child learn so many different concepts. In a race to get their critter home, they'll never realize how much they are learning about shapes.

2. Use the onscreen prompt to find where the animals are hidden.

In a classroom setting, all three games can be used to help teach a variety of concepts. Games are a wonderful way to help kids master lessons you have already taught. Seeing the scores can also be a good way for you as a teacher to gauge the level of understanding a child has. It also helps children improve their motor skills and reasoning skills.

Classroom Activities

1. Kindergarten

A. Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles,

rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and

spheres).

After teaching a lesson about different shapes using manipulatives, I will allow students to practice using Hide and Seek. To make it fun, we will do a 'tournament' style, where two students at a time battle it out on different iPads. After completing a game, students will trade partners.

2. 1st Grade

Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes that possess defining attributes.

We will begin the lesson by playing this game individually. After everyone has played for twenty minutes, we will begin the lesson. Ths lesson will be in more in dept than Kindergarten and focus on some of the harder aspects of the game. After the lesson we will do color pages where each different thing is suppose to be colored a different color.
