In our research, we have found countless signs that have two versions, where one version has both hands acting symmetrically (that is, they have the same handshape, location, movement, and orientation, just flipped symmetrically), and the other version simply uses the dominant hand and leaves the non-dominant hand unused. In this way, one can interpret the non-dominant hand as redundantly copying what the dominant hand is doing, adding a sort of extra clarity, comprehensibility, or emphasis of the sign. Its behavior can be seen as fully predictable from the dominant hand, and in this way, we treat the one-handed version as the basic form and the two-handed form as a sort of extra-clear signing.
As such, we label the two-handed version with a special sign. Specifically, we use the '=' sign after the gloss, to represent that both hands are equally doing the same thing. The one-handed version simply omits the '=' sign. There are many such examples, just some of which are: A.LITTLE1, ANGER1, NICE1, NICE2, SHUT, COME, GOOD1, etc.
See below how the word for 'a little' has two versions; one with just one hand used (A.LITTLE1) and another with the nondominant hand added in as a perfectly symmetrical copy (A.LITTLE1=).
In a similar but still separate way, some signs involve both hands, but where the two hands have different behaviors. That is, their handshapes, locations, orientations, and/or movements may be distinct, and not just symmetrical. In examples like these, it is far less common to see a two-handed sign become one-handed. Still, this variation does happen, and it is known in the sign linguistics literature as "weak drop", as the weak (nondominant) hand's work is simply dropped from the sign.
When such examples are seen, they are marked with the label "-½" at the end of the gloss. The full form has the same label minus the "-½", and is taken to be the basic form of the sign.
Because the nondominant hand's behavior in such signs is not totally predictable from the dominant hand's behavior, this sort of variation is not as common in clear and careful signing. It might be more common when someone is signing more casually, when the word is highly predictable, or when one hand is being used for another purpose, such as holding a phone for a video call.
Some examples of weak drop include: DRAW, WRITE, AIRPLANE1, BUDDHIST1
See below how the word for 'draw, art' has two versions; one with both hands being used in different ways (DRAW), and the other with the nondominant hand simply removed from use (DRAW-½).
